American High School
The first school was started in 1963 sometime in the late fall and was located immediately inside the main gate of Camp New Amsterdam (CNA). It went up to ninth grade, the rest of the high school kids went to International High School in The Hague. They left by busses from CNA before dark and get back after dark.
In the seventies the students of the 10-12 grades of the Soesterberg American Elementary/Junior High were bussed to the Allied Forces Central Europe (AFCENT) International School located in Brunssum, The Netherlands. Students travelled on government leased busses, leaving CNA on Sunday night for the 2,5 hours trip. During the week they stayed in dorms and returned after school on Friday back to Soesterberg. The Soesterberg American High School (SAHS) was officially opened on the August 25, 1981. One of the officials was major Gelderblom.
![]() | Like other highschools SAHS played sports too, they played basketball, softball and even scoocer. The squadron was the Wolfhounds but the school, on the other hand, were "The Falcons". Why the two never shared the same mascot is unclear. |
