Squadron insignia of the 32nd Wolfhounds
The emblem pictures a caricatured wolfhound's head on a light turquoise blue disc, bordered in light yellow orange, edged in black, wolfhound's head brown and white with open mouth and fangs bared, dripping saliva, proper, white facing the dexter. The insignia represents a fighter squadron hungry for action and eager to attack the enemy.
The basic patch was authorized by the Commanding General Army Air Forces, by AG letter 400.161 (12-7-1942) OB-S-A dated 19 December 1942. On August 2, 1945 the patch was approved by the Commanding General Army Air Forces.
In 1959 the 32nd became "Royal"; the unit was authorized to bear the Royal Crest of the Netherlands. The unique honor to use the royal bear was granted in recognition of the unit's contribution to the defense of the Netherlands. It has been said that there was a "Royal Decree" issued by the Queen, however, no documentation has been received to substantiate this claim. The crown symbolizes royalty, while the wreath and fourteen oranges represent an orange tree, a traditional symbol of the Royal Dutch Family (The House of Orange) who was direct descendents of William of Orange, the first Prince of the Netherlands.
July 10, 1985 the then Chief of Staff Royal Netherlands Air Force Lieutenant General F.J. de Jong confirmed in a letter (074.631.069.019) to the commander of the 32nd that the squadron was authorized to bear the Wolfhounds patch with the wreath and crown in the manner the squadrons of the RNLAF use their emblems. Although the squadron used the emblem that way, it wasn't approved until 1986. February 25, 1986 it was conditional approved by USAFHRC to use the wreath and crown of the Royal House of Orange.
